Police Commissioner’s credit card cloned, money stolen
The police are in pursuit of members of a criminal network who cloned the credit card of Police Commissioner Antony Anderson and stole more than one million dollars from his account.
Fraud Squad detectives commenced their probe last month after it was discovered that Major General Anderson had been defrauded.
Earl Hobins, a 44 year old businessman, who was arrested in connection with the scam, had his bail extended when he appeared before the St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday.
Mr Hobins was charged by the Fraud Squad after $83,000, procured through the illicit use of General Anderson’s credit card, was used to pay his son’s school fee at a prominent high school.
Investigations revealed that the illegal activity began on February 22, when General Anderson was the National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
The cops say criminals cloned the credit card of General Anderson and stole $1.3 million over a one-week period.
They say a man and woman created two cloned cards which have been used to purchase appliances, car rims and $30,000 worth of hair, among other items.
Investigations led them to Mr Hobins who was arrested and charged on March 9.
Mr Hobins is to return to court on May 1.
