Statements of condemnation have been issued following last night’s fatal shooting of Corporal Melvin Smith in Manchester.
In his reaction, Police Commissioner George Quallo has declared that every effort will be made to find his killers.
He said it was unfortunate that while performing his duty, Corporal Smith was met with such cruelty and callousness.
Smith,38 was assigned to the Manchester Community Safety and Security Branch, was shot about 8 o’clock, while assisting a man who was robbed of his motorcycle on Manchester Road.
The robbery victim who was also shot by the thieves,has been hospitalised in stable condition.
Police Federation calls for “strong action”
Meanwhile, the Jamaica Police Federation has intensified its call for stronger action to be taken against persons found guilty of killing members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
Chairman of the Police Federation, Sergeant Raymond Wilson, says when criminals kill members of the Force, it shows a lack of regard for national security.
However, he did not disclose what action he wants taken against persons who kill police personnel.
And National Security Minister Robert Montague is appealing to residents to provide information which can help in the capture of Corporal Smith’s killers.
In a statement, Montague expressed regret at the killing of Corporal Smith and said the JCF has lost a valuable member, as Corporal Smith played an integral role in Police Youth Clubs in the parish.
Meanwhile, the Manchester police are searching for two men in connection with the fatal shooting of Corporal Smith.
