A policeman, who was mistaken for a robber, was last night stabbed by residents in Barbican Square, St Andrew.
His identity has not yet been released.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit confirmed that the incident occurred around 11:30 pm, but would only divulge that the lawman was admitted to hospital in stable condition.
However, OBSERVER ONLINE understands that the lawman was in the area when he observed a mob beating.
It is said that the cop intervened in an attempt to stop the attack on two alleged robbers, but was mistaken for a third and was subsequently beaten and stabbed.
His firearm was taken from him by his attackers and handed over to the police.
More information later.
