POLICE WHO BEAT PRISONER IN LOCK UP FREED OF CHARGES

A police constable who was accused of carrying out a violent attack on a prisoner in the Kingston Central Police lock-up three years ago, was freed Friday afternoon before the St Andrew Parish Court.

Constable Tarique Mutler was freed after he and his attorney, Vincent Wellesley, strongly challenged the allegations.

Constable Mutler was charged last year following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions into the beating of the prisoner.

Prosecutors had reported that the complainant, Ralph Jackson, was severely beaten by Constable Mutler and another police officer while he was in custody at the Kingston Central Police lock-up in 2016.

He suffered fractures to his rib and arm and cuts to his elbow and forehead during the alleged beating.

Jackson also claimed he was stabbed in the leg with a knife by one of the policemen during the assault.

He said he was beaten after being accused of robbing an off-duty policeman at gunpoint in Spanish Town, St Catherine.

He said he was also beaten while in custody in Spanish Town before being transferred to the Kingston Central lock-up.

However, at the trial, Mr Wellesley challenged the testimony of Jackson.

He said Jackson, who became violent while in custody, was restrained by other police personnel.

The presiding judge accepted his submissions and ordered the release of Constable Mutler.
