POLICEMAN FALLS ILL IN COURT AFTER FOUND GUILTY OF WOUNDING PREGNANT WOMAN

Policeman who shot and injured pregnant woman in taxi cab found guilty

Senior Superintendent of Police Anthony Castelle, who was charged with opening gunfire on a taxi cab in Montego Bay, St. James, two years ago, in which a pregnant woman was injured, has been found guilty.

A statement from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) said he will be sentenced on December 14.

Castelle was convicted Friday afternoon in the St. James Parish Court on the charges of unlawful wounding and misconduct in a public office.

The charges arose from an incident on January 22, 2016, in which the pregnant woman, Janice Hines, was shot.

It was reported that Ms Hines was a passenger in a taxi that was travelling along the Mount Salem main road in Montego Bay when the driver was signalled to stop.

The driver reportedly disobeyed and sped off and was chased by the police.

During the chase, shots were fired and Ms. Hines was shot.

An investigation later revealed that SSP Castelle fired the bullet which struck the vehicle and Ms Hines.

Cop hospitalised

SSP Castelle fell ill and had to be hospitalised following the verdict.

His attorney, Althea Grant, told RJR News that her client is receiving treatment.

Ms Grant declined to comment on the nature of his illness.
