Smelly brown seaweed plagues beaches, government allocates $5m towards cleanup
The government has allocated an initial sum of $5 million to help with the cleanup and disposal of large clumps of sargassum that have been rapidly spreading across beaches and coastlines in several parishes.
Sargassum is a brown seaweed that produces an offensive odour.
Researchers say although it washed up onto coastlines across the Caribbean several years ago, the algae bloom have grown rapidly in recent years.Local stakeholders in the hotel industry and owners of beachfront properties have complained that it has begun to drive away guests and beachgoers.
The National Environment and Planning Agency says the $5 million is to come from a special fund set aside for emergency clean-up operations.
