SOLDIER AND WIFE HELD ON DRUG CHARGE

JDF Soldier And Wife On Drug Charge Granted Bail

Jamaica Defence Force Corporal Dwayne Stevens and wife Stacey-Ann Stevens were granted bail in the sum of $600,000 for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act when they appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court yesterday.

Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie made a successful bail application when the couple appeared before Parish Judge Leighton Morris. Champagnie told the court that his clients were not flight risks and were proper candidates for bail. The lawyer told the court that his clients had three children, one of whom needed special care.

Bail was granted on condition that the accused persons report daily to the Portmore Police Station. They must also surrender their travel documents. The two accused should reappear in court on July 26 when the matter will again be called up.

Allegations are that on May 11, police personnel from the Narcotics Division raided a house occupied by the Stevens.

During a search, several bags and suitcases with compressed vegetable matter resembling ganja and weighing 651 pounds were discovered. Both parties were charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, taking steps to export ganja, and using premises to store ganja.
