TEACHER ACCUSED OF BEATING CHILD WITH BED FOOT

ohuh

A preparatory school teacher, accused of using a “bed foot” to beat a five-year-old student for making noise in class, is scheduled to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s court on June 29.

The accused, Shanique Kerr, 20, of a Harwood Drive, St Andrew address, reportedly used the foot of a bed to hit the child in his hand causing discolouration and swelling, and was arrested and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

According to the complainant’s statement, on May 19 he was inside his classroom when the teacher stepped out of the class.

He said that when the teacher returned he and the other children were chatting and making noise, and she beat the entire class, including him, and the told them to sit and place their heads on the desks.

Later in the evening the complainant reported the incident to his father when he arrived to pick him up at school, and the father spoke to the principal.

The father later reported the matter to the police after his son started to complain about feeling pain and his hand started to swell. The child was also taken to see a doctor.

Yesterday, when the child showed up in court, his father told Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey that it was the third time that his son was being beaten by the teacher and that the Parent Teachers Association had apologised to him.

The case was set for mention pending the receipt of a medical report, which was not yet signed by a doctor.

Kerr’s bail was extended.
