TWO MEN WHO KILLED MALE HAIRDRESSER BECAUSE HE WAS GAY FOUND GUILTY

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is today reporting that two men were found guilty of the August 2011 murder of male hairdresser Richard Morgan.

The verdict was returned in the Home Circuit Court on Monday.

According to a media release from the office, the trial of Shamar Salmon and Richard Lindo, which began on May 30, saw Morgan’s sister testifying against both men.

In her testimony, she said Salmon and Lindo attacked the deceased in the Torrington Park area of Kingston. The Office of the Director of Prosecutions said evidence proved that Salmon used a machete to chop Morgan, and Lindo used a pick-axe stick to hit him in the back of his head twice.

Shortly after, Morgan succumbed to his injuries.
The release added that it was alleged that Morgan was a homosexual hairdresser and because of that he was discriminated against in the area. The office said Morgan was allegedly subjected to continuous abuse at the hands of the now convicted men and other community members.

The Crown alleged that on the night Morgan was killed he was attacked by the accused in circumstances where they held the view that he was a homosexual and “all b…man fi die”.

After two weeks of trial, the jury on Monday returned with a unanimous verdict of guilty of murder for both men.

St Andrew businessman Huey Gowdie was today convicted of manslaughter in the Home Circuit Court.

Gowdie was on trial for murder arising from the shooting death of popular businessman Shango Jackson in the upscale community of Beverly Hills, St Andrew in 2012.

Jackson was shot and killed at the Shenstone Drive home he shared with his ex-wife, who was reportedly involved in a romantic relationship with Gowdie.

Prosecutors argued that Gowdie went to the premises to with the intent to kill.

However, defence attorney argued that Jackson was shot after he attacked Gowdie and threatened to kill him.

After deliberating for nearly two hours the seven-member jury convicted Gowdie of the lesser charge.

The verdict left some of his relatives and friends in tears, among them being Jackson’s ex-wife.

Valerie Neita Robertson, Gowdie’s attorney, said she was “grateful its not murder.”

“It was a verdict based on the lack of intention to kill,” said Neita Robertson.

She also indicated that she will appeal the verdict.
