The University of the West Indies, Mona in St Andrew, now requires the payment of a non-refundable commitment fee of $20,000 in order for new students to confirm their space at the institution.
In a letter obtained by OBSERVER ONLINE from a new student, the institution said the payment is a prerequisite for registration for the 2017/2018 academic year.
The institution said this fee must be paid by July 31 and will be applied to students’ tuition or any other fee payable upon their enrolment at the UWI.
More information later.
While I do support the commitment fee, because it will be deducted from your total school fee after selecting your modules. It has it advantage and disadvantage.
Yuh have some ppl weh love run go select modules and full up the class them knowing dam well and good that them nuh intent fi go these classes cah dem usually indecisive about what they want to do.
Then there are those who really need time in allocating money for their school fee and haffi scrape fi get the money, these people will be force to settle for some classes that they really don’t want. Fix the thing uwi and utech.
A non-refundable commitment fee is standard practice in the United States. It ranges from ~$200 – $400! It forces people to make sure they are committed to attend the university come Fall term or give up the space so others on the wait list has a shot at that university.
I have no objections. University a money making place a nuh non-profit suh meck dem treat it like the business it is.
Something UTech has been doing for years. Nothing wrong with it. Rationale: People who have the money to pay can pay and select their modules.
