VANESSA KIRLAND TRIAL BEGINS

The trial of three members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force accused of the fatal shooting of 16 year-old Vanessa Kirkland, ended its second week on Friday before the Home Circuit Court.

Vanessa, who was a student of Immaculate Conception High School, was killed on March 20, 2012 when members of a police team opened fire on a car in which she was a passenger.

Five other passengers were also shot.

The INDECOM forensic examiner who processed the scene has been giving testimony.

On Thursday, prosecutors were forced to treat one of their witnesses as hostile, after the individual refused to answer questions about the statement she gave to investigators about the shooting.

Prosecutors applied to the presiding judge to treat the woman as hostile after she said she did not want to be a witness in the case.

She completed her testimony Friday following cross examination by the defence.

Constables Anna-Kay Bailey, Durvin Hayles, and Andre Wain Smith are on trial for Vanessa’s murder.

The results of the post mortem revealed that Vanessa died of bullet wounds to the head and neck.

Defence attorneys have suggested that the police were in pursuit of a blue Suzuki Swift along Spanish Town Road in St. Andrew when they were fired on by occupants of the vehicle, took evasive action along Norman Lane and returned gunfire.

The shooting resulted in Vanessa’s death.
