Residents in western St. Mary are finding it increasingly difficult to get water as some of the sources have dried up due to the worsening drought conditions affecting sections of the island.
Robert Montague, Member of Parliament for St. Mary Western, said several springs and rivers that were used by the National Water Commission (NWC) to supply communities including: Gayle, Palmetto Grove, Fellowship Hall, Guys Hill and Bonnie Gate are no longer flowing.
Mr. Montague said the NWC has been trying to find other sources to get water to the communities.
He appealed for residents to conserve water and exercise patience.
Mr. Montague was speaking on Sunday at a education grant handing over ceremony in the constituency.
The Jack’s River in Oracabessa, St. Mary has also dried up due to the drought.
The river’s bed is now overgrown with grass.
RJR News spoke with members of the Jack’s River community on Tuesday, who expressed shock at the state of the river which served their domestic needs.
They spoke as they gathered to collect water from a pipe connected to a spring in the Spring Head community.
