A BULAWAYO man last week smacked his wife all over the body with his fists after she had refused to cook his favourite relish.
Mbekezeli Khumalo (42), of Bulawayo’s Pumula North suburb, allegedly got home drunk and woke up his wife, Siphiwe Dlamini (29), at around 11pm demanding his meal before assaulting her.
This was revealed when Khumalo appeared before provincial magistrate Mr Willard Maphios Moyo facing physical abuse charges.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a wholly suspended three months in prison on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within a period of five years.
Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza told the court that last Sunday, at around 11pm, Khumalo went home drunk and violently woke his wife up.
“He woke his wife up, and then he demanded his meal. When his wife, Dlamini, gave him his meal, Khumalo realised that the relish prepared wasn’t his favourite. He got furious and started insulting her. He proceeded to hit his wife with fists several times all over her body,” said Mageza.
The court further heard that Khumalo started to accuse his wife of cruelty, telling her that she was not a loving wife.
The following day, the matter was reported to the police leading to Khumalo’s arrest.
The court heard that it was not Khumalo’s first time to assault his wife.
However, he told court that he would not assault his wife again.
“Your worship, I will not do that again and I will avoid being controlled by alcohol. Sometimes I do this under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
