A 34-YEAR-OLD Harare man yesterday appeared in court for allegedly raping his 27-year-old domestic worker.
Raphael Kandema was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate Josephine Sande facing the charge of rape.
He was granted US$50 bail and the matter was deferred to October 23 for trial continuation.
Circumstances leading to Kandema’s arrest are that on September 28 at around 1pm, the accused person went home and found the complainant washing dishes inside the kitchen.
It is alleged that Kandema held the complainant’s hand by the wrist and pulled her to his bedroom.
The victim asked Kandema about what he was doing and protested at his actions and he kept quiet.
Kandema went on to push complainant on the bed and raped her.
After the incident, the complainant started crying and Kandema comforted her promising to bring her contraceptive pills to prevent pregnancy.
On the same day in the evening, the accused person gave the victim a packet of family planning pills and he instructed her to consume the whole packet of which she did.
On September 30, the complainant revealed the rape to Kandema’s wife Cecilia Mazhangara who begged her not to report the case.
The victim later informed her sister of the rape and she advised her to lodge a complaint with the police.
The victim then made a report at Waterfalls Police Station and she was referred to MSF clinic for a medical examination.
A medical affidavit was obtained and will be produced in court as evidence.
