“He never told me he was already married when we met. I was shocked when I discovered that he not only has a wife but that he’s blessed with children and this regularly brought about misunderstanding between us and we would fight.
“He cultivated the habit of abandoning me any time we fought. He would beat me blue-black and leave home for an unknown destination for weeks denying me of all contacts to him.”
“He insisted I mustn’t work but refused to meet my needs and that of our only child. He never bothered about my welfare even when I was pregnant with our child. I was solely responsible for my pre-natal and ante-natal care and also provided her needs.
“Since his way of dodging his responsibility as the breadwinner was to desert the home without any arrangement with regards to our survival, I reported him to his mother who sometimes came to our aid.
“My lord, I’m tired of living like a widow. I appeal to this honourable court to please separate us so that I can put my life together again, “the plaintiff stated.
She’s free to go, “Azeez told the court.
“Jelilat is not worthy to be called a wife or mother; she lacks wisdom and every other quality expected to be displayed by a virtuous woman. She has totally failed as a home-maker.
“My lord, I can’t live with such a woman any longer.
“She accused me of abandoning her and our child, but she had forgotten that she once left home without my knowledge for about two weeks. I was left with no other option than to take up the responsibility of nursing our child, “he stated.
Giving his judgment after listening to both parties, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade observed that their marriage had broken down irrevocably.
