A man has asked an Igando Customary Court in Lagos State to end his marriage to his wife on the grounds that she eloped with her lover.
Adeniran Olutayo told the court that his wife, Folake had left their matrimonial home for her lover’s house.
“Our marriage is barely two years old and we are yet to have a child. She started having cold feet when I had an accident which affected my spine. I was asked to abstain from sex for a while.
“ My wife started misbehaving to the extent that she will call her boyfriends in my presence. I warned her to desist from this act but she refused. I have reported her to her parents who assured me that she will change.
“She doesn’t cook for me or take care of me. I had to resort to buying food outside when hunger wanted to kill me. My wife would cook and eat and even refrigerate the rest without bothering about my welfare. She would claim that since I did not contribute to the money she used in cooking their food I had no right to eat of it.
“ I give my wife N1000 on a daily basis and this is also different from what I give her for the upkeep of the home.
“The last straw was when I came back from Ibadan almost six months ago and found out that she had moved out of the house. I traced her to her lover’s house and she pretended that she does not know me. Her parents pleaded with her to return but she refused. As it is, I am no longer interested in the marriage and I urge the court to end the marriage because I cannot bear to sleep with a woman who had had sex with other men,” he said.
The estranged wife, however, denied the allegations claiming that she left her home when her husband started maltreating her.
“He blames me for his misfortunes. I am not against the dissolution of the marriage,” she said
President of the court , Adegboyega Omolola, adjourned the matter till January 17 for continuation of trial.
