Man deliberately infects girlfriend with HIV
A MAN from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo allegedly deliberately infected his girlfriend with HIV.
Munyaradzi Makwevera, 38, allegedly kept his status a secret and hid his stash of anti-retroviral tablets in a shoe which he kept under his bed.
Makwevera appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso facing a charge of deliberately infecting his 23-year-old girlfriend, whose name cannot be disclosed for ethical reasons, with HIV.
The court heard that the woman stumbled on the tablets while she was cleaning Makwevera’s bedroom.
In a warned and cautioned statement, Makwevera said his girlfriend already knew his status before they started dating.
“I don’t admit to the charges. When I fell in love with her she was told by my ex-wife that I was HIV positive and she said she did not care,” he said.
Magistrate Chimiso did not ask Makwevera to plead and granted him $150 bail.
Prosecuting, Stewart Madzore told the court that sometime in January 2015, Makwevera fell in love with the complainant and they started staying together.
“In the months that followed the two indulged in unprotected sex. During the month of November the complainant was cleaning the house when she found a bottle of anti-retroviral tablets inside the accused’s shoes,” said Madzore.
“The complainant took the tablets and asked the accused about them and he told her that they belonged to a friend. From then on the accused became abusive to the complainant and the accused eventually admitted that the tablets were his. The complainant went to a New Start Centre and tested HIV positive after she had tested negative the previous year.”
The prosecutor said Makwevera knew that he was HIV positive and on medication but had sexual intercourse with the complainant without using protection.
HIV
People just need to be more responsible when it comes to their sexual health. You wouldn’t buy a house without getting a survey, or a car without a test drive, hey you wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes without trying it on. Use condoms. For me personally, any man that I would be getting involved in we would be going to the clinic head and head for a full check up. I said that if me and my husband part, I done wid man. I refuse to make my front carry me home.
Getting married soon. My fiancé and I are clean of any disease ( thank god) and mi tell miself a it that. Not a bun mi nah give. If mi get anything a him mi get it from.
