A customary court in Oyo State, Oja Oba/Mapo Grade C Customary Court, Ibadan, has dissolved the six-year-old union between Hakeem Azeez and Fatimoh Azeez.
Hakeem had earlier presented a divorce suit against his wife, Fatimoh, at the court, alleging that she is a liar, hard hearted, troublesome and was always fighting him and their neighbours.
The plaintiff stated that he was tired of his wife’s atrocities and therefore prayed the court to dissolve their union.
“I’m fed up with my marriage because my wife has made life unbearable for me, “the plaintiff told the court.
“My wife’s words are cheap. She had on many occasions lied to me she was going to a certain place and I would later discover she went somewhere else.
“Anytime I challenge her, she would turn the issue into a fight.
“She’s stubborn and no one can convince her otherwise when her mind is made up on an issue even when it is glaring it won’t end well.
“She’s also fond of nagging and complaining about everybody and anything. Nobody does anything right aside her, “he added.
“Our neighbours regard us as nuisance because we fight nearly every day. She has caustic tongue and always succeeds in provoking me to anger no matter how much I tried to restrain myself from beating her.
“She also fights our neighbours and has been arrested by the police on many occasions. Whenever this happens, I run around to gather money for her bail.
“My lord, I’m tired of this kind of shameful lifestyle. I pray that you separate us, “Hakeem said.
Fatimoh denied all the accusations leveled against her by her husband and refused to agree to his plea for divorce.
“All my husband has said before this court are lies. He said all that to gain the court’s favour, “Fatimoh told the court.
“My husband did not tell you what our problem actually is. He’s fond of asking me to abort his pregnancy any time I take in. I’ve done this more than twice but refused to this time around.
“He became mad and made the home hot for me.”
“I don’t want to leave him because I don’t want our children to suffer. I also don’t want to start moving from one man to another, “she concluded.
Chief Ademola Odunade, after listening to the duo adjourned the case till September 26 to create an opportunity for an out-of-court settlement.
On the adjourned date, Fatimoh explained to the court the steps she took for possible reconciliation, which unfortunately proved abortive.
“I went to appeal to my mother in-law to help me placate my husband, but she told me to leave his son alone.
“I told my mother this and she asked me to go and plead with my husband. I went to him, but he refused to give me audience.
“My lord, I’m also ready for divorce, but I pray the court to appeal to my husband to give me two months to complete my house so that I can move in there.
Giving his judgment, Odunade dissolved their marriage and gave custody of the two children to the defendant.
He ordered the plaintiff to pay N8, 000 monthly as the children’s feeding allowance and be responsible for their education and health care.
