Deborah denied all the allegations against her but acceded to divorce. Giving her evidence, the defendant told the court that her husband was irresponsible, easily provoked and violent.

According to her, she was the one who ought to have dragged her husband to court but her parents had always restrained her.

Ruling after listening to both parties, the court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje, said more evidence would be needed.

He, therefore, adjourned the case till June 11 and ordered both parties to return to court with their children and parents.

Ojo said: “I’m no more interested staying married to my wife. I no longer trust her because she enjoys being in the company of other men.

“Any time I go to her shop, I will always leave in anger because she’s fond of entertaining strange men, who she calls her customers there. She stays back in the shop with these men and return home late. My lord, she’s yet to convince me she’s not dating them.

“I stopped having sex with her two years ago in order to avoid contacting STDs. I don’t want her to send me to an early grave as a result of her promiscuous life style, “Ojo stated.

“My wife is stubborn and is always insisting on having her way. She rubs shoulders with me in the home and treats my words with disdain.

“Worse is the fact that he has turned our children against me. She encourages them to disrespect me and be rude to me. The last time I rebuked our last child, he almost beat me up.

“She gives our neighbours and friends the impression that I don’t take care of her and our children, but she never tells them I give her N2, 000 weekly for soup and this aside the allowance for foodstuff.

“I’ve tried my best to make my wife happy but she doesn’t appreciate my efforts. I desire a peaceful life but I can’t achieve this with her under my roof. My lord, I plead again that you separate us.”

“My lord, I should be the one dragging my husband before this honourable court but my parents have always counseled me against it.

“He has consistently proved to be irresponsible from the outset of our marriage. He has never been interested in my welfare and that of our children.

“I solely bear the brunt of the expenses of running the home. I supply the home with food and also enrolled our children in school. He has contributed nothing towards their education.

“He consumes electricity more than every one of us but will never pay the bill. I have reported him to his siblings often times but he has failed to change.

“He is easily provoked and fights me every time. He’s fond of fighting me with dangerous objects. He will beat me and chase me all over our compound with a cutlass. There were times he sent me out of the house and I had to sleep in uncompleted buildings.

“The only duty he never fails to carry out is that of sleeping with me. He’s never tired of sex. I started refusing him sex few months ago to show my displeasure at his irresponsible acts, but this didn’t go down well with him.

“He once got mad with me on a particular night after trying and failing to have his way with me. He lifted me up and hit me on the floor. He almost broke my back. I nursed back pain for weeks,” she stated.

“I once got fed up with him and reported him to his friend who made an attempt at mediating in our issue. My husband felt insulted and hit him on the head with an iron chair.

“I moved out of his house after this, but went back to him because of our children.

“My lord, the man he was always meeting in my shop is my pastor. He comes to pray with me on regular basis, “she said.
