Seeing her husband enjoying warmth of another woman was enough for now 33 year old Winfred Wandia to slash the woman on the neck, little did she know that was her ticket to 20 year behind bars. Born and bred in Makueni County, Wandia now the prison preacher was married at church wedding to a polytechnic teacher she met in the same institution. Her marriage started going south when she became pregnant as husband turned on their maid to quench his sexual thirst. “Rumours filtered that my husband was having intimate relationship with our maid but every time I asked him he denied, this continued for a while as the maid acted like boss”, recalls Wandia.
The mother of two adds “in one of her insults she told me to cut off my husband’s penis and hang it around my neck to keep it away from her”. According to Wandai, the maid had been fired but her husband brought her back to run their shop as she nurses the baby, “on the material Sunday had I gone to tether our cows before going to church when the maid followed and mocked me that I am a loser leading to fierce fight” said Wandia. Revealing “it just happened in seconds I picked the sharp panga I was using to cut nippier grass and slashed her on the neck”.
Wandia denied murder charge at Machakos court and spend more than a year in remand before it was reduced to manslaughter and sent to the prison where she is set to leave in 2019 with lots of lesson learnt. She said, “My family had agreed to compensate for the loss, I really regret committing the act and wish no one can make any mistake outside there, I only saw my husband once, but I am ready to go back and pick up where we left”. Josephine Nthoki, Wandia’s sister said, they miss their sister so much and they pray daily for miracle to happen and be set free soon.
