KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Ministry of Education has expressed sympathies to the relatives of Romaro Salmon, a grade-nine student of Maldon High School in St James, who was fatally stabbed by a fellow student on Tuesday.
The incident has caused a riot on the school compound, resulting in a contingent of police officers being deployed to the area.
The ministry said in a release a short while ago that it has deployed a trauma team to provide counselling to the school community. In addition, the ministry’s director of safety and security in schools will visit the institution this week, the release added.
Although, the incident occurred off the school compound, Education Minister Ronald Thwaites says anti-social behaviour by students continue to be a cause for concern by the ministry.
This latest incident, he notes, will propel the ministry to intensify the implementation of its suite of behaviour management programmes in schools across the island.
