When agents at a New York City airport felt unusually dense handrails on a passengers’ luggage, they probed deeper and found just what they suspected: cocaine.
Some 2.5 pounds — or $45,000 worth — of cocaine, to be specific.
A U.S. Customers and Border Protection spokesperson announced Friday that agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport made the bust on Jan. 6.
Chevelle Rusheen Nesbeth, traveling to the U.S. from Montego Bay, Jamaica, was stopped by customs officers who thought her luggage handrails felt suspiciously thick.
Nesbeth’s luggage was searched, turning up a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, officials said. She was arrested on suspicion of importation of a controlled substance and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.
Nesbeth faces federal narcotics smuggling charges and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the U.S. Eastern District Court of New York.
“This latest seizure demonstrates the vigilance of our CBP officers, and their excellence in detecting those who would try to smuggle these illegal substances,” said Robert E. Perez, director of field operations in New York.
