Henry Thuku is a devastated man. For nine months, he anticipated the birth of his child, but this apparently was never to be. His wife, Eunice Wangechi, 53, allegedly duped him that she was pregnant and reportedly bought a baby for Sh7,000. Thuku told The Nairobian he is still trying to come to terms with the situation – that a wife he loved dearly and trusted could lie to him. It is claimed that Wangechi bought a one-week-old baby from Virginia Wairimu Mwangi. The two women who appeared before a Nyeri court were charged with child trafficking and have left residents in shock. “Although I knew she could not bear children due to her age, I trusted her. When she told me she was pregnant, I was on cloud nine. I started saving some money in anticipation of the new born,” he said. Thuku claimed he never suspected his wife was lying since she ‘experienced’ morning sickness and had ‘weird cravings’. The tailor, however, says he once demanded to know why his wife was coming home late and drunk. But she always convinced me that the baby was fine. I decided to be patient with her,” he said. On the day she was to deliver, Thuku claims he offered to accompany her to hospital, but Wangechi reportedly refused and said she was fine. “She told she was fine and I should not worry. I reported to work hoping everything was going to be fine,” claims Thuku. Thuku claims the wife did not communicate with him for two days and he suspected something was amiss.
“I tried to call her but her phone was off. I tried to reach her relatives, but no one had heard from her. I was confused and scared,” he told The Nairobian. However, three days later, he claims, Wangechi resurfaced with her bundle of joy. Thuku says he was excited, but little did he know this was the beginning of his nightmare. “Three days later, the area chief accompanied by police came to my home demanding to see my wife. They claimed my wife had bought a baby from a woman (Virginia Wairimu Mwangi) and they arrested her. I was in shock,” he said. He added that, “After interrogating her, she confessed to buying the baby for Sh7,000,” Thuku told The Nairobian. Wangechi claimed she loved her husband and the only way she could trap him was bear him a child. The two women were taken to court pending their case on March 9.
