A memorial service for US-based Jamaican businessman Lowell Hawthorne will be held at the Christian Cultural Centre in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, December 19.
The Golden Krust Founder and CEO committed suicide inside the restaurant’s Bronx factory on Saturday.
His funeral service will follow candlelight vigils at Golden Krust’s first location on East Gunhill Road in the Bronx this Saturday from 3pm to 8pm and one at the University of the West Indies, Mona in Kingston this Saturday from 6pm to 8pm.
All are invited and persons are being asked to walk with a candle, sign the condolence book, and pay tribute to Hawthorne’s life.
Following Hawthorne’s death, the Golden Krust family issued a brief statement on Facebook.
“Our hearts are broken, and we are struggling to process our grief over this tremendous loss. Lowell was a visionary, entrepreneur, community champion and above all, a committed father, family man, friend and man of faith,” the restaurant shared on Facebook on Sunday.
Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill operates a chain of over 100 Restaurants in nine states (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina and Massachusetts).
In 1989, Hawthorne along with his wife Lorna, four of his siblings and their spouses, pooled all their resources to open the first Golden Krust retail location on East Gun Hill Road in Bronx, New York.
By 1996 they owned 17 Restaurants throughout New York City. The business became so successful that the Hawthorne’s were encouraged to create franchises and they seized the opportunity to do just that.

I cannot understand why people resort to conspiracy theories when the reality is right in front of them. To date his family has not refuted his cause of death as to his motive only he knows. He was a man, not God. Imperfect as we are we are all susceptible to foibles. He was an accountant and according to news reports one family member said he was cooking the books. He may have been facing at a little jail time, bankruptcy perhaps and probably his pride could not allow him to live with that shame. Let it go people it is what it is. Cause of death: one gun shot wound to the head (as per video evidence and two witnesses) motive: unknown!
