Believe it or not, skin bleaching is deeply connected to slavery. Lighter skinned slaves were preferred or “valued” by slave owners and were given more desirable work. Ex instead of picking cotton they were nannies instead. (It came with a cost…They were being raped and some impregnated by Massa)
In a nutshell…we internalized this and today people who bleach their skin do so because they believe that being lighter skin gives them an advantage/reward/privilege/acceptance etc.over darker skinned blacks. Ultimately looking more European=power!
