Hello –
I found your web page online, detailing dreams and Jamaican superstitions around them. I think you might be able to help me with something.
My boyfriend of four months, who I loved very much, broke up with me because I told him about a dream I had.
It was days before Halloween and there were endless ads for horror movies on television. I dreamed about one of these ads, specifically about someone being possessed — I think it was an excerpt from The Exorcist — for a few seconds. I’ve never seen The Exorcist but I’ve seen clips on television. And, I’m aware of a scene where the woman who is possessed levitates over her bed.
The dream was rather unsettling but I didn’t think much of it other than being annoyed that it disturbed my sleep.
I made the mistake of telling my boyfriend (a 57 yo Jamaican man) about it, in passing, and he broke up with me the very next day.
He maintains this dream tells him something about “how I see things” and that I “might have been exposed to something without being aware of it”. There was no talking to him about it or trying to reason with him. He was done. He has not spoken to me since.
It’s quite unfortunate because, until this came up, we were getting along great and had no issues. I had not idea he was superstitious like this although I’m aware that he grew up in a fundamentalist household. Very religious.
I was speaking with another Jamaican man about it yesterday and he explained a little bit about Jamaican superstition.
Can you give me any further insight? Based on what I read on your site, I think you can.
I don’t have any hope of reconciling with this man but I’d really like to understand what the heck happened!
There are some Jamaican ppl who take dreams literal. Some don’t even call their dreams a dream, they will say they had a vision.
In your case seems like your boyfriend wanted to get out of the relationship for any reason and the dream was his out. Lesson to be learned, keep your dreams to yourself in the future.
I am easily turned off from people who dwell too much on what they dreamt about, I will read materials that give insights, like, books etc.;
But persons who are overkill in telling you EVERY DAY what they dreamt of the night before can be overbearing.
My mom is like that….. I would just avoid her sometimes for months at a time; until I just told her flat out to STOP.
The guy never serious about you.
Stop watching horror movies
No, he was serious about me. We were talking about moving in together — we were practically living together — we’d planned and bought tickets for vacations together, I’d met his entire family attended a family wedding. We were planning a future together.
