Police announce closing times for businesses in western Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The police are today advising residents and business operators in the parishes of St James, Westmoreland and Hanover that in light of the declaration of the State of Public Emergency (SoE) operating times for businesses will be adjusted.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness this morning declared a state of emergency in the western parishes saying that the decision was made based on a request by the security forces.

The SoE will be in effect for the next 14 days on a proclamation by the Governor General.

The following closing times for businesses now apply:

  1. Clubs and fast food restaurants – from 6:00 am until 12:00 am
  2. Every place required by law to operate under a tavern licence – from 7:00 am until 10:00 pm
  3. Petroleum filling stations – from 6:00 am until 11:00 pm

  3. Any other public place, except a tourism enterprise, or a tourism accommodation as defined in the Tourist Board Act –From 7:00 am until 10:00 pm

In the meantime, the police are imploring individuals to comply fully with the new stipulations.

The security forces are advising residents and people traveling to, or through the three parishes, it is important to have a valid form of identification on them at all times.

The police are advising persons that vehicular checkpoints have been set up in the operational areas.

When approaching vehicular checkpoints, motorists should slow down and roll down all windows; if it is nighttime, persons should turn on their roof lights. In addition, people are being advised of the possibility of delays in the areas where vehicular checkpoints are set up, and as such, should exercise patience and plan accordingly.

The police are also advising members of the public that customer service lines have been established for three detention centres in western Jamaica.
