DIANA KING MARRIES LONG TIME PARTNER

The 2012, ‘Shy Guy’ singer Diana King declared to the world that she was a lesbian.

Her announcement was met with mix reactions, especially from Jamaicans who are often referred to as some of the most homophobic people on Earth.

But on the weekend, the singer boldly took to social media to announce that she had tied the knot with her longtime girlfriend, making her the first reggae/dancehall act to openly announce a same-s*x union.

“As an artiste, who is LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bis*xual, and transgender), born and raised in Jamaica, I never thought I’d ever say ‘my wife’ in this lifetime. I am completely and sincerely grateful to all who fought and continue to fight worldwide for our deserved equality and human rights. My true personality is introverted and private, totally different from the me on stage. My hands are shaking as I write this post. For me, it is a sign that I am about to exercise courage because they shook like this when I came out in 2012. I am sharing this because I strongly believe visibility is vital for change and I’m gonna live it authentically,” a portion of her Facebook post read.

Although the majority of local industry players are labelled as being zero tolerant as it relates to homos*xuality and same-s*x marriages, there was very little criticism about King’s decision. Based on the social media reactions, it might be safe to say that lesbians are more accepted in Jamaica than gay men.

MORAL VIEWS
“It’s her life, and she can live it how she wants. At the end of the day, she has to be accountable to the Creator, so I don’t judge,” entertainment analyst Olimata Taal said,” she said.

She further stated that while she doesn’t agree with the lifestyle from a spiritual stand point, her personal beliefs are just her choice.

“Do I agree with it from a spiritual point of view? I believe a man is for a woman, and vice versa. The world is so messed up and I attribute all of this to mankind messing up the environment with endocrine disruptor through dioxin, etc. My personal and moral views are my choice. What I feel is wrong, some may feel is right. As long as they don’t push their lifestyle on me on me, it’s her prerogative. It becomes an issue when you try to put in the school or have a gay agenda smashing the culture in people’s face” she said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by dancehall artiste Mr Vegas, who said he wishes nothing but a lifetime of happiness for the singer.

“I do wish her well as she is living her own life. We all have one life, and you just have to live it. If you believe you are living within the teachings of the Almighty, then all is well. But if you are not, you will have to answer to no human but to God in the end,” he said.
