The step-father of NYPD chokehold victim Eric Garner died Friday in Jamaica from an apparent heart attack while walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding, according to the Rev. Al Sharpton and reports.
“Almost 2 weeks ago Ben Carr stood with his wife, Gwen Carr (mother of NYPD victim Eric Garner), his grandson, Eric, Jr and his daughter at the gravesite of Eric. This morning Ben passed while in Jamaica attending his daughter’s wedding,” Sharpton wrote in an Instagram post with a picture of the family at the cemetery.
“I’m deeply saddened beyond words. Pray for Gwen and the Carr/Garner family.”
Ben Carr had been in Jamaica with other members of the Carr/Garner family for the wedding of Lisha Garner, Eric’s sister, when he suffered a “medical emergency” while walking her down the aisle and died, PIX 11 reported.
The death comes just a year and a half after Eric Garner’s daughter Erica also died from a heart attack shortly after she giving birth to her second child.
The five-year anniversary of Garner’s famous chokehold death last week came on the same day federal prosecutors announced they wouldn’t bring charges against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, the cop who placed him in the chokehold.
Pantaleo remains on the NYPD’s payroll while NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill mulls the embattled cop’s fate with the department.
