HUSBAND BEAT WIFE IN HER SLEEP

Jealous husband frightens wife out of sleep with blows to her face
Covering The Courts

A man who woke his wife with a blow to her left eye and another to her mouth in a jealous rage, was warned by the judge to remember that a six-month prison term awaits him when next he raises his hands at her.

The warning was issued to 47-year-old Michael Ricketts when he was fined $20,000 on a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm and given a six months sentence suspended for two years.

“Be mindful of this, when you lift those hands, that there are six months in prison awaiting you,” Senior Parish Judge Andrea Pettigrew-Collins told Ricketts.

The court heard that on November 2 last year, about 11:00 pm, the complainant went home and found that her gate was locked and had to ask her neighbour to call her husband to open the gate.

Shortly after, Ricketts went and opened the gate and told her to close it. She then asked whether or not her son was inside.

Rickets told her that it was she who was outside and “gone all bout and a sleep out”.

They both went inside and Ricketts went to his bed, while the complainant started watching television and fell asleep.

However, she was later awakened by a blow to her left eye and a punch in her mouth.

Their son reportedly intervened and sought to quell the matter, which was reported to the police.

Before the sentence was handed down, Ricketts’s lawyer told the court that her client had pleaded guilty on the first occasion and that he has accepted that that was not the best way to express anger.

She also told the court that Ricketts’s wife has given him a second chance and asked the court to do likewise.

“If someone comes in at 11:00, how is that sleeping out?” the judge asked.

She then told Ricketts that she was concerned about the fact that his wife had reported that this was not the first incident and that there have been repeated incidents of abuse.

“It is clear to me that you are controlling,” Judge Pettigrew-Collins said before fining Ricketts and handing him the suspended sentence.
