A farmer who attempted to board a flight to Cuba using a lost passport was Thursday remanded in custody for sentencing when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Everton Clarke, a farmer of Letiz District in Hanover, pleaded guilty to charges of uttering forged documents and conspiracy. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of forgery.

Allegations are that on about 1:00 pm on July 10 Clarke checked in at the Norman Manley International Airport to board a flight to Santiago, Cuba.

He presented a Jamaican passport, which bears his photograph. However, the passport was reported missing by the female holder (Nashey Brown) on November 14, 2012. The woman’s photograph was reportedly removed and that of Clarke’s inserted.

Clarke’s attorney, Vincent Wellesley, told Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey that his client had been charged with a similar offence in the past and the court was told that he had paid a fine of $100,000 on that occasion.

Pusey made it clear to Wellesley that this time around Clarke would face jail time and he was remanded for sentencing on Monday, July 20.

Wellesley said his client was travelling to Cuba for medical treatment.
