INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE JOSEPH PATTERSON SAYS ELECTIONS ARE UNFAIR

FREE UNFAIR ELECTIONS
We are told that Jamaica has free and fair elections, but only the naive or ignorant could ever believe that. People are free to vote, but only the politicians with access to a lot of money stand a chance. In the last election, the two parties agreed to spend up to $15,000,000 per candidate to woo voters. At 126 candidates between them, that is about $1.9 billion plus direct party spending. In a small economy with a limited number of “big money donors”, this kind of big money campaign has created a JLP-PNP monopoly over the government of our country and has effectively frozen out the possibility of all but candidates willing to submit to the dictates of the JLP or PNP way. You might notice that few party rejects ever bother to go independent as they know “how di ting set.” The UIC model of governance with its principle of mandatory publicly sponsored debates as the primary mode of campaign financing is arguably the most effective way of establishing free and fair elections. Under the current system of free but unfair elections, we allow the worst to rise to the top.

  1. G, the money that he is talking about is are the funds that politicians are using to secure votes. With is technically not democratic. Relative to political spending, funds should only be used to get the message out to the electorate.

  2. It’s all about money nothing more nothing less..if u check the status of the all the politician around the world it’s the same thing they come tv n in allrooms paraid around towns n tell the people what they gonna do to make thair lives better n the people fall for it..all politician have one 4 thing’s in comond the bible, thief, lie n selfishness..that’s my views

  3. The whole democratic system is seriously flawed, politicians have to beg majority of their election money from wealthy individuals and large corporations, then if they win they have to give these people special privilege, like taking bribes, turning a blind eye to criminal activities which leads to a corrupt system with the politician trapped in the middle… Demon-cracy is an inadequate system…
