Jamaica on alert for possible tsunami
Jamaica is on alert for a possible tsunami arising from a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that shook sections of the Caribbean early Tuesday night, with the US Tsunami Centre saying that hazardous waves are possible.
The earthquake occurred west of Jamaica at a depth of 6.2 miles.
According to the US Tsunami Warning Centre, hazardous tsunami waves are possible within 1000 kilometres (621 miles) of the quake’s epicentre.
This includes some coastal areas of Jamaica, Mexico, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Cayman Islands, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Major Clive Davis, Director-general of Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) told RJR News that all relevant state agencies and the municipal corporations had been alerted.
