The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency says a Jamaican national is among 13 people detained during a four-day “surge effort” that targeted immigrants who have been issued a final order of removal in the past five years.
It said that those detained also have criminal convictions or have pending criminal charges.
ICE said that the unidentified Jamaican, who was in the US illegally, was arrested on Wednesday. He had a prior firearms-related offence.
“As this operation clearly demonstrates, ICE continues to focus its efforts first on public safety threats,” said ICE’s Newark, New Jersey Enforcement and Removal Operation (ERO) Field Office Director John Tsoukaris.
“The vast majority of the individuals targeted in this effort have criminal offences in addition to their immigration violations, making them among the highest priority for enforcement,” he added.
ICE said some of the individuals arrested during the operation will face US federal criminal prosecution for illegal re-entry after removal, and that those detained who are not being federally prosecuted will be processed administratively for removal from the country.
Ice said last year 58,581 immigrants were arrested, 90 per cent of whom had criminal convictions or previously issued final orders of removal from the country.
