A JAMAICAN woman has been awarded more than $200,000 in damages by the courts for unlawful detention by Immigration authorities in Trinidad and Tobago.
Her lawyers told the Express yesterday it was unlawful for police and Immigration authorities to round up foreigners and detain them at the Immigration Detention Centre, Aripo, where they are denied fundamental human rights.
Scores of detainees at the centre have pleaded for their freedom in the midst of squalid and oppressive conditions in which they are being kept.
On July 3, the State conceded in the litigation brought against it by Jamaican national Sasha Watson, and High Court Judge Frank Seepersad ordered judgment in favour of Watson and that the State pay her $209,641.20, inclusive of damages, interest and costs.
Shades of Shanique Myrie. They can never really compensate for the belittling of your dignity Ms.Sasha Watson. We give thanks for the victory all the same.
