Detectives from Operation Cease Fire on Wednesday were conducting a drug investigation in northwest Baltimore when they tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, but the vehicle did not initially stop.

A short time later, the vehicle stopped in the back parking lot of a business in the 3600 block of Rogers Avenue.

After speaking with the driver, 40-year old Derrick Lamb, a police K-9 unit was called to the location. Detectives found about 1.5 kilograms of suspected raw heroin, about 1 kilogram of suspected cocaine and a large quantity of money from in vehicle, police said.

During the course of this investigation, detectives noticed 51-year-old Rayon Gray leaving a bakery by crawling across the parking lot toward a Ford Taurus. Police learned Gray was Lamb’s partner.

“Actually crawling on his belly across the parking lot with a set of keys in his hands,” said Lt. Christopher O’Ree, with the Baltimore Police Department.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for his vehicle and recovered 17 pounds of suspected marijuana from the car.

Police said they got an additional search warrant for the Montego Bay Bakery in the 3600 block of Rogers Avenue.

The total street value of the drugs recovered is about $262,000.

“What you see before me and before you today (the drugs) are the poisons that were just about to hit the streets of Baltimore,” Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said on the drugs that were recovered.

Investigators believe both men are major drug distributors in the western and northwest areas of Baltimore City.

“Some of them were extremely violent groups that Ceasefire had been targeting over the last 18 months,” O’Ree said.

Operation Ceasefire targets violent offenders who are likely to reoffend. Police give them a chance to get out of the game.

“Derrick Lamb is a 40-year-old man who refuses to get out of the game so that’s why he is a cease fire target we’re paying attention to everybody who is likely to harm other people,” O’Ree said.

Those who don’t get taken down.

“The message from Ceasefire is clear: Put the guns down. Stop the shooting. It’s as simple as that. If you continue to pick up a gun in the city and hurt another human being, the police department will focus on you,” O’Ree said.

Police said Lamb and Gray were arrested and charged with several drug-related offenses. They are currently being held at the Central Booking and Intake Facility.
