NO ASPHALT TO DO ROAD WORK

The Parliamentary Opposition is calling for the government to immediately deal with the critical shortage of asphalt.

In a statement Monday afternoon, Mikael Phillips, Opposition Spokesman on Transport, said the shortage has stalled road construction and repair projects.

Mr. Phillips added that many roads had been prepared for repairs by National Works Agency (NWA) contractors.

According to the opposition spokesman, the contractors have temporarily abandoned work sites, leaving many of the roads in an even more dangerous condition.

He said the situation has been further compounded by the National Water Commission (NWC), which is in the middle of its loss reduction programme and several roads have been dug up to facilitate work crew accessing pipelines.

Mr. Phillips said the shortage was due to improper planning by the authorities.
