R.I.P MAURICE WHITE

  1. Thanks for putting this up Met. For anybody born early enough to remember the seventies (like me!), it really feels like the Grim Reaper is gunning for musicians who if they never started being musicians in the seventies, they sure as hell gained their stardom in that decade.
I really do believe that something good was in the water between 1964-1979. Too much good music in all genres and melody and groove was King! Maurice White was one of the best at what he did. I never forget my Aunt, a then long time resident of New York sending my father albums from America. A double studio 54 album, a Peaches and Herb album, Off the Wall by Michael Jackson and a Double album by Earth Wind and Fire which had great cover art. “Fantasy” is one of my favourite tunes by anybody. Maurice wrote brilliant, conscious lyrics, could dance with swag, had a perfectly shaped afro and had a tenor voice par excellence.
Sorry ’bout the ramble. But to say that I am frustrated that all these cats dropping off are in no way shape or form being replaced whether by talent or intention, would be an understatement . A sh*ttier time in music recording is hard to find than now… all genres, with what used to be considered “black” music (R&B, Reggae, Soul, Hip Hop and “derivatives including dancehall) seemingly deliberately dropping once high standards and musicality.
Trust and believe, “rock” music will recover from the stagnancy BEFORE “black” music; why? YOUNG rock fans seem less ignorant of what came before than YOUNG fans of “black ” music who seem not to “mourn” the lack of musicality or “authenticity” that came before. Dancehall and Rap (not Hip Hop) really need to take a back seat to Reggae and Hip Hop like the derivatives that they truly have become….or until the main protagonists in each genre develop some wit to go with their overinflated egos and not too much talent (which even if one is over blessed with, one has to work , work , work on honing The Craft).
Anyway, after I finish reading the site, it’s an EW&F Youtube session I’m going for. Pure upliftment! RIP Maurice White and condolences to his brother Verdine and the EWF Family.
