Security guard who disarmed cop remanded
Twenty-three year old Romario Abrahams, the security guard accused of disarming a constable at the Cross Roads police station, last month, was remanded Tuesday when he appeared before the St. Catherine Parish Court on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The case against him has been transferred to the Gun Court for a hearing on Friday.
Mr. Abrahams, a resident of Spanish Town, St. Catherine, was arrested on August 23, a day after he reportedly disarmed and injured the policeman.
Investigators say he was captured at an establishment in Spanish Town.
He reportedly had the constable’s pistol which was loaded with 17 rounds.
He was handed over to the Half-Way-Tree Police Tuesday afternoon where he is facing additional charges, including attempted murder.
It was reported that Mr. Abrahams went to the Cross Roads police station to give a statement and submit a medical report in a case of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
While being assisted, he attacked and disarmed the police officer.
After disarming the policeman he allegedly placed the firearm at the constable’s head and squeezed the trigger, but the weapon failed to discharge.
According to an investigator, the policeman escaped death because the breach in the chamber of the weapon was empty.
Mr. Abrahams then escaped.
Jamaica Constabulary Force policy requires that the breach in service pistols be kept empty to avoid accidental shootings.
