SEVEN SHOT BEFORE SUNDAY MORNING IN WESTERN JAMAICA

Police monitor western Jamaica – seven shot, six killed by gunmen

The Police High Command is again keeping a close watch on western Jamaica following several murders and shootings over the weekend.
Seven persons were shot, six fatally, in attacks by gunmen in St James and Westmoreland.

A student from the University of Technology (UTECH) and a 16 year old student of Muschette High School were among the victims.

A Canadian visitor was also shot and is in critical condition.

Acting Police Commissioner Novelette Grant and members of the High Command toured western Jamaica yesterday to meet with divisional commanders to discuss crime prevention plans.

Grant told RJR News that the Force is determined to stem the bloodletting in western Jamaica and there is a social intervention component to the anti-crime strategy in troubled communities .
More than 360 persons have been murdered since January compared to 290 during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Grant confirmed that she has been asked to continue as acting Commissioner until the Police Service Commission (PSC) decides on who will fill the post.

The 90 day appointment of the Deputy Commissioner to act as Commissioner expired on Friday but the PSC said it was still deliberating on the matter.

The PSC began its search in January following the sudden retirement of Dr Carl Williams.
