The spate of murders rocking downtown Montego Bay in recent weeks yesterday claimed another victim when a lone gunman attacked an unsuspecting motorist along Hart Street, pumping several bullets into his head and chest, killing him on the spot.
The deceased, who one eyewitness said did not stand a chance as he was trapped in his vehicle, has been identified as 36-year-old Rollin ‘Superman’ Walker of a McCatty Street address, roughly two blocks from the murder scene.
The brazen gun attack has further undermined the integrity of an ongoing state of emergency, which was introduced to stem the rise in homicides in the northwestern parish.
“Wa mi see a gwaan mek the state of emergency look like a big joke. … It is not like a night. Dis a broad daylight. … Dawg nyam wi supper because dem killer yah nuh fraid fi buss dem gun anyweh,” an eyewitness told The Gleaner.
According to reports, shortly after 9 a.m., Walker was driving a Toyota motor car along Hart Street towards downtown Montego Bay, when on reaching the intersection with Corinaldi Avenue, the gunman pulled open the car door and opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot.
A police patrol team, which rushed to the location, transported Walker to the nearby Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
“He (Walker) was not an angel. He has been in trouble with the police on many occasions. He was out on bail for a gun-related incident, for which he was arrested and charged,” a policeman familiar with the deceased told The Gleaner.
Walker was the third person to be killed in the parish in 48 hours.
On Sunday evening, an unidentified male was found with multiple gunshot wounds beside an abandoned Voxy minivan along Home Hill Road in Ironshore. He was rushed to hospital, where he died. On Monday, Orlando Henningham, of Marl Road in Montpelier, was shot dead by unknown assailants at his home.
Since the start of the year, St James has recorded 112 murders, making it one of the bloodiest police divisions islandwide.
