WOMAN WHO WAS A PART OF UCHENCE GANG FREED

A woman who was accused of being a member of the Uchence Wilson gang was freed Thursday afternoon.

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes ordered the release of Judith Johnson following no-case submissions by her attorneys Anika Townsend and Christopher Townsend.

“We made our no-case submissions and the learned Chief Justice agreed with us on the basis that the Crown did not prove any at all…that our client was part of any gang…. There is no proof at all that she sold anything, no proof that she accepted anything and so the Crown failed,” said attorney Christopher Townsend.

Ms Johnson is the aunt of the prosecution’s chief witness in the case.

Two other accused were released on Monday.

Prosecutors are now responding to no-case submissions by the defence.

Investigators say the Uchence Wilson gang was behind a wave of armed robberies in several parishes between 2015 and 2017.

The gang is accused of stealing goods worth more than $400 million during the period.
