A 31-YEAR-OLD man from Shurugwi poisoned his son before hanging himself after failing to stomach his wife’s alleged infidelity.
Moreblessing Moyana killed himself on Tuesday, but his son, a minor whose age could not be immediately ascertained yesterday, is said to be admitted to Shurugwi District Hospital.
Acting Midlands province police spokesperson Assistant Inspector, Ethel Mukwende, said:
“I can confirm that we received a report of a Shurugwi man who committed suicide after giving his son poison intending to kill him also. Police are on the ground and investigations are underway.”
One of his neighbours told The Chronicle that Moyana, of Irion side suburb in Shurugwi, suspected that his wife was cheating on him and they always quarrelled about the issue.
The neighbour, Samson Ncube said Moyana was a supervisor at a local mining company while his wife worked as a domestic worker.
Ncube said Moyana poisoned his son on Monday evening, but his wife, whose name was not provided, rushed him to the hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Before he could be arrested over the poisoning, Moyana killed himself the following day, shortly after quarrelling with his wife again.
“Moyana and his wife have been fighting over allegations of infidelity. He was suspecting that his wife was seeing a guy from a local housing project. On Sunday the fight was intense with his wife refuting the allegations,” he said.
“He gave his son some poison but the wife realised it early and took the child to hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.”
Ncube said on Tuesday at around 1:30PM, Moyana traded insults with his wife and he later went to a bushy area and hanged himself from a tree.
“His body was found hanging by a passer-by who alerted the police,” said Ncube.
Asst Insp Mukwende said people should approach their elders, church leaders and the police if they have problems instead of resorting to murder or suicide.
