Chicago prosecutors say mom-to-be Miata Phelan, 24, flew into a violent rage and stabbed her boyfriend to death because he failed to purchase a gift for her, The Chicago Tribune reports.
The stabbing occurred inside of the couple’s apartment on April 30. The fall out began earlier that day during a family shopping trip after 28-year-old Larry Martin, who is also the father of Phelan’s unborn child, purchased gifts for his 8-year-old son, Lavelle, and 25-year-old cousin—but not Phelan. Assistant State Attorney Glen Runk says Phelan threw a fit and started attacking Martin and accusing him of being “selfish” as he drove home from the mall. Things are said to have gotten so heated, that Martin, his son and his cousin were forced to walk the rest of the way home.
Unfortunately, Phelan’s rage didn’t stop there. She proceeded to lock the trio out of the apartment, but Martin continued to bang on the door, asking her to let them in. When she finally did open the door, prosecutors say she stabbed Martin in the side as his son looked on.
“This is what you get for messing with me. I hope you die mother f—-r,” she allegedly said over his body as he bled to death.”
His cousin quickly escorted him away and tried to apply pressure to the stab wound, but the victim collapsed once he made it to the sidewalk. Aware that the wound inflicted upon him would be a fatal one, Martin offered final words to his son.
“His last words was to me,” Lavelle told the Sun-Times. “He said, ‘I’m gonna die, but I love you.’ ”
Martin was later pronounced dead at the Advocate Christ Medical Center. Phelan, who is seven months pregnant, has been charged with first-degree murder. Bail has been set at $1 million. Phelan’s sister, Arnesia Phelan, alleges that Martin had been an abusive boyfriend.
