Dancehall’s origin dates back to the late seventies in Jamaica after Ska and Rocksteady became popular. It is a fairly young genre of music and made it’s mark through the beats that were created from instruments and later turntables. The dances that followed were the icing on the cake.
Dancehall created a cultural shift that made it o.k for men not to have stability. Being with a female and establishing a home made Dancehall’s men look weak although its predecessors :-Papa San, Yellow man, Lt Stitchie, Ninjaman, Shabba Ranks and many more all established homes quickly with women.Those who came after them were not as easy to tie-down. This opened the door for Jamaican groupies to come in and enjoy life from musical royalties.
The first set of known groupies came out of Excelcior High School in Kingston. The women, who are now near fifty were said to not wear underwear as it gave the men easier access. Jamaica’s first Dancehall queen was said to be the one that led this group of girls.
They quickly learned the ropes and were big fans of RJR as it was the social media of the 80ties and 90ties. Excelcior groupies did their thing and after graduating they spread their exploits to businessmen in the country who had more money than Dancehall’s artistes.
The Excelcior groupies were(are) bisexual and were paid to do sexual favors and set the precedence for those who came up after them. Sex for money and many did not get emotionally attached .
Ninjaman was the first artiste to bring an international groupie to Jamaica and was said to have lived with her after meeting her at one of his shows in Switzerland. Bounty had the first Miss World and Beenie Man was the first Dancehall artiste to be turnt all the way out by a groupie
The initial introduction of the Excelcior High School groupies opened the door for underage girls to become involved with Jamaican artistes. It became the norm until artistes were exposed for their involvement right here on JMG.

I would beg to differ! groupies predated the alleged Excelsior’s of the 1980’s and went as far back as the 1970’s, just ask dillinger, lone ranger and the rest of them who are still alive! in those times they were referred to as “qreddells” or “kreddells” however you want to spell it, only difference was they weren’t as lewd and raunchy in their fashion attires come session time back then, but their objectives were the same, seek out the soundman, operator, chanter etc., I should know, my uncle had a sound system back then!
