The Centre for the Investigation of S*xual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) has made a major breakthrough in its probe into the abduction and rape of women by men posing as taxi operators.
The police are reporting that they have nabbed a 29 year old man who is allegedly involved.
Dwayne Edwards, who resides in Kingston 10, was held last month and later charged with the abduction and rape of a 21 year old women who boarded a taxi in downtown Kingston.
Mr. Edwards, who appeared before the St. Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday on charges of abduction, rape and robbery, was refused bail by Parish Judge Maxine Ellis.
Judge Ellis told Mr. Edwards’ attorney that she would not grant bail based on the seriousness of the allegations against him.
Investigators reported that on September 20, the 21 year old woman boarded a taxi cab in downtown Kingston en route to Papine in St. Andrew.
Mr. Edwards who was sitting in the back seat, posing as a passenger, pulled a knife on the woman and began robbing her.
The driver of the taxi detoured to an unknown location where the woman was blindfolded and raped repeatedly.
They also stole her ATM card, cellular phone and a tablet computer.
The men withdrew $2,000 from her bank account, then released the woman.
CISOCA has been trying for the last year to capture men who have been abducting and raping women who board certain taxis.
